How long does it take to get an HGV licence? A realistic timeline
Each step from car licence to lorry licence, how long it really takes on DVSA and DVLA's own figures, the deadlines that can catch you out, and what slows people down.
Short answer
If nothing holds you up, around 6 to 10 weeks from booking your medical to passing your last test. The provisional licence usually comes back within days to 3 weeks, lorry practical tests averaged a 2.5-week wait in 2025 to 2026, and the training itself is 1 to 2 weeks. The biggest delays are a declared medical condition (DVLA averaged 42 to 56 working days for those in early 2026) and failing the theory test.
Step by step
| Step | How long | Source |
|---|---|---|
| D4 medical | One appointment. The form is valid for 4 months. | D4 guide |
| Provisional lorry licence (D2 and D4 by post) | DVLA says within 3 weeks. Postal lorry and bus applications averaged 3 to 6 working days in January to April 2026. | Written answer, April 2026 |
| …if DVLA checks a medical condition | 42.5 to 56.2 working days on average, January to May 2026 | DVLA figures via Trans.info |
| Theory test (multiple choice and hazard perception) | Book once your provisional licence arrives. Revision time is up to you; a fail means waiting at least 3 clear working days to retake. | GOV.UK |
| Driver CPC Module 2 (case studies) | Can be taken before or after the theory test, once you have your provisional licence. | GOV.UK |
| Training | 15 to 24 hours for Class 2, 24 to 35 for car to Class 1: usually 1 to 2 weeks | Kent courses |
| Practical tests (off-road 3a, on-road 3b) | Lorry and bus tests averaged a 2.5-week wait in 2025 to 2026. Schools usually book them around your course. | DVSA annual report |
| Driver CPC Module 4 | Often on the same day as the on-road test | |
| Driver CPC card | Should arrive within 20 days; you can drive for work while you wait | GOV.UK |
Three example timelines
Illustrations built from the official averages above. Your own dates depend on clinic, test and course availability.
| Situation | Roughly | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Straightforward Class 2, passes everything first time | 6 to 10 weeks | Medical in week 1, provisional back in week 2 or 3, theory and Module 2 in weeks 3 to 5, training and tests from week 5 |
| Fails the multiple-choice theory test once | Add 1 to 3 weeks | 3 clear working days before a retake, plus finding a slot and revising |
| Declares a medical condition on the D4 | Add 2 to 3 months | DVLA averaged 42 to 56 working days on medical cases in early 2026 |
| Fails the on-road test | Add a few weeks | A new test slot, plus a refresher; Kent schools charge £427 to £495 for a retest |
Deadlines that can catch you out
- D4 medical: valid for 4 months from the date it's signed. DVLA must receive it within that time.
- Theory certificate: valid for 2 years from passing the first part. You must pass the off-road and on-road tests within that time, or take the theory again.
- Off-road (3a) to on-road (3b): you must pass 3b within 6 months of your 3a certificate, or take 3a again.
- Module 2 to Module 4: the Module 2 pass letter is valid for 2 years, and you must pass Module 4 within that time.
How to avoid delays
- Book the medical first, and post the D2 and D4 together straight away.
- Start revising for the theory test while you wait for the provisional licence. Only about half of lorry multiple-choice tests are passed. Theory pass rates.
- Don't pay for fixed training dates until your provisional licence is back, especially if you've declared a medical condition or have points.
- Before you pay, ask the school when your practical test is booked and at which centre. Kent's lorry test centre.
- Book enough cab hours to pass first time: a retest adds weeks as well as money.
