Free and funded HGV training in Kent: what's really available in 2026
The HGV bootcamps have ended, and there's no government grant for a Class 1 or Class 2 licence. But there are still ways to get some or all of the cost paid, if you know where to ask. Here's every route, who qualifies, and the catches.
Short answer
There's no free HGV bootcamp in Kent in 2026. The national HGV Skills Bootcamp contracts ran to 31 January 2026, and Kent's own bootcamps for 2025-26 and 2026-27 cover other sectors. There's also no individual government grant for a lorry licence.
What is available: a free Level 2 HGV qualification through the Adult Skills Fund if you're 19 or over and unemployed or earning under £26,800 a year, an LGV apprenticeship or employer-funded trainee job, and discretionary Jobcentre help. Each has a catch, explained below.
Every route compared
| Route | Who it's for | What's paid | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adult Skills Fund: Level 2 Certificate in Driving Goods Vehicles | Age 19+, unemployed or earning under £26,800 a year, living in Kent | The qualification in full, up to Class 1 (C+E). The rules also allow the first attempt at the licence tests and the medical to be covered. | We found no Kent college or provider advertising it. You'll need to ask providers directly. |
| LGV driver apprenticeship (Level 2, C+E) | Age 18+, hired by an employer as an apprentice | Up to £8,000 of training. You pay nothing and earn a wage. From August 2026 the government pays all of it for apprentices aged 16 to 24. | You need an employer to take you on. On 17 October 2026 there were no LGV apprenticeship vacancies listed in England. |
| Employer trainee schemes | People hired into another role first, such as van driver or yard work | The licence, while you're paid | Usually a repayment clause if you leave within a set time, often 2 years. |
| Jobcentre: Flexible Support Fund | Universal Credit and some other benefit claimants | Discretionary help with costs that improve your job prospects | Decided case by case by your work coach. It can't pay for what other funding already covers. |
| Jobcentre: Sector-based Work Academy | Benefit claimants | Up to 6 weeks of training and work experience, with a guaranteed interview | An interview, not a job, and not necessarily a licence. |
| Armed forces leavers: Enhanced Learning Credits | Service leavers with enough qualifying service | £1,000 or £2,000 per claim; you pay at least 20% | Courses must lead to a Level 3 or higher qualification, so check with ELCAS whether a lorry course qualifies. |
The Adult Skills Fund route, step by step
This is the one most people have never heard of. GOV.UK lists five Level 2 Certificates in Driving Goods Vehicles that include the Driver CPC tests, and says you can get one free if you're 19 or over and unemployed or on a low income. For 2026 to 2027 the income limit is £26,800 a year.
- Check you qualify: aged 19 or over, living in Kent, and unemployed or earning under £26,800 before tax.
- Ask colleges and HGV training providers: "Do you deliver a Level 2 Certificate in Driving Goods Vehicles funded through the Adult Skills Fund?"
- If you're on benefits, tell your Jobcentre work coach. They can confirm your eligibility and may know local providers.
- Get in writing exactly what's covered: the training hours, the tests and the medical.
Apprenticeships
The LGV driver apprenticeship takes about 13 months and trains you to Class 1 with Driver CPC while you're paid. The employer chooses the training provider. Large operators such as Royal Mail and Amazon have run LGV apprenticeships in 2026, though not at named Kent sites. Search Find an apprenticeship for "LGV" and set up an alert.
What's no longer available
- HGV Skills Bootcamps. The national contracts ran from 1 February 2024 to 31 January 2026. There's no national HGV wave for 2026-27; bootcamp money now goes to local areas, and Kent's goes to creative, construction, retail, health and social care, early years and agri-food.
- Bootcamps in other counties. Essex, London and West Sussex still fund some HGV places, but only for people who live there.
- Loans. Advanced Learner Loans only cover Level 3 to 6 qualifications, and lorry licence qualifications are Level 2. Professional and Career Development Loans are closed. Commercial finance is all that's left. What finance costs.
"Free HGV training" adverts
If an advert offers a free HGV licence, ask three things before you give any details:
- Who is paying? A government scheme, an employer or a loan?
- Is it a job or a course? The Advertising Standards Authority has ruled against course adverts made to look like job vacancies.
- What would you owe if you leave? Get any repayment terms in writing first. Guaranteed jobs and repayment clauses.
Paying for it yourself
If none of these routes fits, compare prices carefully. Like for like, a Kent Class 2 licence costs £1,373 to £3,272 all in. Every Kent price · Is it worth it?
