HGV theory test pass rates: only half pass the multiple choice

DVSA's figures for every part of the lorry licence: the theory test, hazard perception, the Driver CPC case studies and the practical tests. Year by year, and at Kent's theory test centres.

Great Britain, April to March each year, plus April to June 2026. Source: DVSA.

Short answer

Only 52.2% of lorry theory multiple-choice tests were passes in 2025 to 2026, down from 64.9% in 2021 to 2022, and 50.3% in April to June 2026. Hazard perception is passed far more often, at 82.1%. The Driver CPC case studies test (Module 2) has also fallen, to 63.1%.

The multiple-choice theory test now has a lower pass rate than the on-road driving test (60.7%). Each retake costs the fee again, and you must wait 3 clear working days.

The theory test certificate lasts 2 years from passing the first part, and you must pass the driving tests within that time. If you fail a theory test, you can book again straight away, but you can't take it for 3 clear working days.

Why people fail, and what helps

  • The multiple choice needs 85%. That's 15 wrong answers at most, across subjects many car drivers haven't met: drivers' hours, tachographs, vehicle weights and dimensions, braking systems and loading. Revise topic by topic and sit full 100-question mock tests under time before you book.
  • Hazard perception is about timing. You score more the earlier you click once a hazard starts to develop. Clicking constantly or in a pattern scores zero for that clip.
  • Module 2 is judgement, not memory. The questions are based on real situations, so practise reading a scenario and choosing what a professional driver would do.
  • Module 4 can be failed on one topic. A high overall score still fails if any of the five topics is under 15 out of 20.

Many training packages include a learning platform for these tests. Ask to try it before you pay: a provider with a real platform can show it to you. How we score learning platforms.
