Before you book

  • Compare per hour, not per lesson. A 90-minute lesson at £60 is £40 an hour; a 2-hour lesson at £80 is also £40 an hour.
  • Block bookings save little. Most Kent schools knock 2% to 8% off for 10 hours. Check what happens to unused hours if you stop or change instructor.
  • Check the instructor's badge. A green badge is a qualified driving instructor (ADI). A pink badge is a trainee who has passed two of the three qualifying tests and holds a 6-month trainee licence; trainees must not advertise themselves as "PDIs". Some schools charge less for trainees, some don't.
  • Ask about their grade. Qualified instructors are graded A or B at their standards check. You can only see a grade if the instructor lists it on DVSA's find an instructor service, so ask.
  • Book your own test. Since 12 May 2026 only you can book your car test, on GOV.UK. Instructors can't do it for you, and anyone selling test slots is breaking DVSA's rules. The 2026 booking rules.
  • Pick your test centre with care. Kent pass rates run from 42% to 65%, and waits from about 5 to 15 weeks. Kent test centres compared.
