HGV agency work in Kent: pay rates, umbrella companies and the pitfalls

Agency work is how most new lorry drivers get started. What Kent agencies were paying in October 2026, which ones take new passes, why an umbrella rate isn't what you'll be paid, and your rights on pay, holidays and fees.

Adverts checked 17 October 2026.

Short answer

Kent agency adverts we checked paid about £17 to £20 an hour for Class 1 general haulage on PAYE, and £22 to £25 for postal work, with Class 2 at about £15 to £20. Only 3 of 26 adverts openly welcomed newly qualified drivers; most wanted 6 to 18 months' experience.

An umbrella rate looks higher but isn't comparable: the umbrella company takes its margin, employer's National Insurance, pension and holiday pay out of it before your tax. Compare PAYE with PAYE.

Umbrella companies: why the higher rate isn't higher

Some agencies pay you through an umbrella company, which employs you and pays your wages. The rate quoted for umbrella work is an "assignment rate". GOV.UK warns you may not get the advertised rate, because before your tax is worked out the umbrella takes off:

  • its own fee, or margin;
  • employer's National Insurance, 15% of earnings above £96 a week in 2026 to 2027;
  • the employer's pension contribution;
  • holiday pay, which it pays you back later or rolls into your pay;
  • the Apprenticeship Levy, if it applies.

On PAYE through the agency, the agency pays employer's National Insurance on top of your rate. That's why one Sittingbourne advert offered £18.50 an hour PAYE or £20.74 umbrella: the umbrella figure has the employer's costs inside it. HMRC's umbrella pay calculator shows what you'd actually take home. GOV.UK, working through an umbrella company.

Umbrella warning signs

  • Offers to keep a fixed share of your pay, or pay part of it as a "loan" or "non-taxable" payment. HMRC says these schemes are tax avoidance, and you, not the umbrella, owe the tax.
  • Your employer's name or PAYE reference keeps changing without you asking, or your payslip shows less than reaches your bank. HMRC links this to mini umbrella company fraud, which can also mess up your employment history and mortgage applications.
  • You must be shown the umbrella's Key Information Document before you agree terms. If nobody gives you one, ask.

Since 6 April 2026, the agency (or the client, if there's no agency) is jointly liable for an umbrella company's unpaid PAYE, which should push agencies towards compliant umbrellas. It doesn't change what comes out of your pay. HMRC Spotlight 60 · HMRC, mini umbrella company fraud · HMRC, PAYE rules from April 2026.

Comparing two agency rates

  • Is holiday pay inside the rate? Gi Group's £18.33 includes rolled-up holiday pay; ADR Network's £18.55 nights rate in Rochester didn't, with holiday building up separately. Rolled-up holiday pay is allowed for irregular-hours workers, at 12.07% of pay, and must be shown separately on each payslip.
  • Is there a minimum paid shift? Driver Hire and WDE advertised 8 hours' pay guaranteed. Without it, a short day is a short wage.
  • Are breaks paid? Breaks don't count as working time for the minimum wage, so it's down to the contract. One Tonbridge advert stated a 30-minute unpaid break.
  • Is travel to the yard paid? Travel from home to an assignment generally isn't working time. Travel between assignments is.

Your rights as an agency driver

  • No fees for finding you work. An agency can't charge you to find you a job, or make it a condition that you buy its training. GOV.UK.
  • Pay can't be held back because the client hasn't paid the agency, or hasn't signed your timesheet. Regulation 12.
  • The same pay after 12 weeks. After 12 weeks in the same role with the same client, you're entitled to the same basic pay, hours, rest breaks and holiday as the client's own drivers. Breaks of up to 6 weeks pause the clock rather than reset it. Staffline's Dartford advert quotes its rates as "After 12 Weeks Parity Pay". Acas.
  • 5.6 weeks' paid holiday a year, from your first day.
  • A Key Information Document before you agree terms, showing your pay, deductions and fees, and written details of each job when it's offered.

Complaints about an agency now go to the Fair Work Agency, which replaced the Employment Agency Standards Inspectorate on 7 April 2026: pay and work rights complaints, or 0345 161 6000.

Working for more than one agency

Plenty of new drivers take shifts from two or three agencies. The drivers' hours limits apply to you, not to each agency: work for another employer counts as "other work", must be recorded on your tachograph or a record sheet, and can never count as rest. An employer can ask you in writing about other work you do, and the 48-hour average working week covers all of it. Drivers' hours rules · DVSA, recording other work.

Getting your first agency shifts

  • Apply to the adverts that say new passes are welcome, then register with the bigger Kent branches anyway. Requirements change with demand.
  • Some agencies test you on drivers' hours and tachographs. All must see copies of your licence and Driver CPC card.
  • Say yes to early starts, nights and short-notice shifts at first. Many adverts want 6 months' driving or more, so those first shifts open up the better work.
  • Keep a log of every shift and vehicle type: it's your proof of experience for the next job. Finding your first job.
